Core Web Vitals explained: Why Google's speed metrics decide your rankings

Google no longer takes your website's word for how fast it is. Through the Chrome browsers of your actual visitors, it measures how quickly your pages load, how fast they respond to taps, and how much they jump around while loading — then folds those measurements into your search rankings. These measurements are the Core Web Vitals, and for Indian businesses competing for organic traffic, they've quietly become a make-or-break factor most owners have never heard of.

The three metrics, in plain language

LCP — Largest Contentful Paint

How long until the main content of the page (usually the hero image or headline) is visible. Target: under 2.5 seconds. This is the metric visitors feel as 'this site is fast' or 'this site is stuck'.

INP — Interaction to Next Paint

When a visitor taps a button or opens a menu, how long before the page visibly responds. Target: under 200 milliseconds. A slow INP is that maddening moment where you tap and nothing happens — so you tap again.

CLS — Cumulative Layout Shift

How much the page jumps around while loading. Target: under 0.1. Every time you've tried to tap a link and hit an ad that shoved it down — that's CLS. Google treats it as the user-hostility metric it is.

Why Indian websites fail disproportionately

  • Real-world testing conditions: your visitors are on mid-range Android phones over 4G, not office WiFi on a MacBook. Google measures their experience, not yours.
  • Heavy themes and page builders: popular WordPress builders can ship megabytes of scripts and styles before your content even starts loading.
  • Unoptimised images: full-resolution photos uploaded straight from a phone camera remain the number one LCP killer on SME sites.
  • Cheap shared hosting: server response times of over a second before the page even begins arriving guarantee an LCP failure.
  • Script pile-up: chat widgets, analytics, pixels, sliders and pop-ups, each 'only' a few hundred kilobytes, collectively strangling INP.

Check your real numbers (two minutes)

  1. Open pagespeed.web.dev and enter your homepage URL.
  2. Look at the top section — 'Discover what your real users are experiencing' — on the Mobile tab. This is field data from actual visitors, and it's what Google uses.
  3. Repeat for your most important service page, not just the homepage.
  4. If the field-data section is green across LCP, INP and CLS, you pass. Amber or red means rankings and conversions are leaking.

The fixes, in order of impact

  1. Compress and resize every image; serve modern formats (WebP/AVIF) and lazy-load everything below the first screen.
  2. Upgrade hosting until server response (TTFB) is under 200ms — no front-end optimisation can outrun a slow server.
  3. Remove plugins, scripts and widgets you don't genuinely use; defer the rest so they load after your content.
  4. Reserve space for images, ads and embeds in the layout so nothing shifts as things arrive (fixes CLS).
  5. Use a CDN so static files are served from nodes inside India rather than a distant origin server.

Core Web Vitals aren't a Google tax. They're a measurement of whether your website respects your visitor's time — on the phone and network they actually have.

Keeping the scores you earn

Vitals aren't a one-time fix: every new plugin, every uncompressed banner upload, every added tracking script erodes them. That's why performance monitoring is a standing item in Suvysoft Solutions' website maintenance plans — monthly measurement against the same targets, so regressions are caught in weeks, not discovered in a rankings drop six months later.
