Shopify vs WordPress: An honest comparison for Indian businesses in 2026

Ask five agencies which platform you should build your online store on and you'll get five confident answers — usually matching whatever that agency happens to sell. So here's the honest version, from a team that builds on both: Shopify and WordPress (with WooCommerce) are both excellent, and both are wrong for some businesses. The right answer depends on your product range, team, budget and growth plans — not on platform ideology.

The fundamental difference

Shopify is a hosted product: you rent a complete, managed e-commerce system. WordPress + WooCommerce is owned infrastructure: free software you host, configure and maintain yourself (or pay someone to). Everything else — cost, flexibility, maintenance, risk — flows from that one difference.

Costs in real rupees

Shopify

  • Basic plan: roughly ₹1,800–₹2,000/month, billed in dollars, price can move with exchange rates.
  • Transaction fees of around 2% when using Indian gateways like Razorpay (plus the gateway's own fee).
  • Premium themes ($100–$350 one-time) and apps ($5–$50/month each) add up — most stores run 5–15 apps.
  • Realistic first-year cost for a professional store: ₹80,000–₹2,50,000 including setup.

WordPress + WooCommerce

  • Software is free; decent hosting runs ₹500–₹3,000/month.
  • No platform transaction fees — you pay only your payment gateway (Razorpay/PayU ~2%).
  • Professional build cost: ₹40,000–₹2,00,000 depending on complexity.
  • Ongoing maintenance is mandatory, not optional: ₹2,000–₹8,000/month for updates, security and backups.

Where Shopify wins

  • Reliability without effort: hosting, security, PCI compliance and scaling are Shopify's problem, not yours. Your store doesn't go down during a Diwali sale because a plugin update failed.
  • Speed to launch: a professional store can be live in 2–3 weeks.
  • Clean multi-channel selling: Instagram, Facebook and marketplace integrations are native and stable.
  • Small teams: if nobody in your business is technical, Shopify's admin is dramatically harder to break.

Where WordPress wins

  • Content + commerce: if your growth strategy depends on SEO content, blogs and landing pages, WordPress is meaningfully stronger.
  • Total flexibility: custom pricing logic, B2B quote flows, regional catalogues, unusual checkout rules — WooCommerce can be bent to fit almost anything.
  • No platform rent: costs don't scale with a subscription, and you're never subject to a platform's policy or pricing changes.
  • Ownership: your store, your data, your server. For some businesses that control is strategic, not sentimental.

The decision framework we actually use

  1. Under 100 products, small team, no in-house tech skills, want to launch fast → Shopify.
  2. Content-led growth strategy, existing WordPress site, custom business logic, B2B elements → WordPress + WooCommerce.
  3. High volume with thin margins → run the transaction-fee math carefully; 2% on ₹50 lakh/year is ₹1 lakh in platform fees.
  4. Either way: budget for maintenance. A neglected WooCommerce store is a security risk; a neglected Shopify store just quietly underperforms.

The platform matters less than the execution. A well-built WooCommerce store beats a badly-built Shopify store, and vice versa — every single time.

Suvysoft Solutions builds on both platforms, which means our recommendation follows your requirements instead of our convenience. If you're weighing this decision, bring us your product range, team structure and growth plan — we'll tell you honestly which foundation fits, including when the answer is the cheaper one.
